WHAT IS SUBOXONE ® (buprenorphine)

Buprenorphine is an FDA approved medication for the treatment of those who have a problem with pain pills or heroin.  It is a low dose opiate which immediately addresses withdrawal symptoms and craving and, over time, allows the brain time to restore to a normal level of receptor sites.

SUBOXONE ® (buprenorphine) TREATMENT

Research studies show buprenorphine is effective only if paired with counseling, and as a maintenance rather than detox medication. Buprenorphine treatment includes seeing our doctor for induction, then follow up visits with the doctor as well as attending either residential or outpatient substance use treatment groups.  Usually after induction, persons will see the doctor in one week, then in two weeks, then possibly every three or four weeks.  Outpatient substance use groups are one hour, once a week, for approximately one year, depending on patient progress. Maintenance lasts an average of three years.

CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION

  • Difficulty stopping the use of pain pills or heroin
  • Willingness to attend substance use treatment groups as well as comply with doctors visits
